Steel Fabrication Production Manager

The Production Manager is responsible for directing and overseeing all production activities within the structural and architectural steel fabrication facility. This position ensures that operational performance aligns with established SQDC (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost) objectives and supports the organization’s strategic goals. The Production Manager provides leadership to departmental foremen, ensures adherence to production schedules, and maintains compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Production Planning & Execution
- Organize and manage daily, weekly, and long-term production schedules to meet project deadlines and production quotas.
- Establish and monitor production goals, output targets, and labor efficiency metrics.
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, and materials to ensure uninterrupted workflow across all departments.
- Proactively identify bottlenecks, capacity constraints, or schedule conflicts and implement corrective actions.
Department Oversight
Oversee all areas of production, including:
- Structural steel fabrication
- Architectural steel fabrication
- Parts and miscellaneous steel production
- Paint and coating operations
- Shipping and receiving
Ensure each department operates in accordance with SQDC expectations, company policies, and project requirements.
SQDC Performance Management
- Ensure compliance with safety policies, OSHA regulations, and industry standards.
- Maintain quality assurance by ensuring work meets drawings, specifications, and applicable codes.
- Support delivery performance through schedule adherence and proactive issue resolution.
- Manage cost performance by reducing waste, improving efficiency, and optimizing resource utilization.
Leadership & Supervision
- Directly manage and support shop foremen, holding them accountable for productivity, organization, safety, and quality.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and performance feedback to foremen and key production personnel.
- Promote clear communication between departments, project management, engineering, and quality control teams.
Quality & Efficiency
- Ensure fabrication work meets applicable codes, drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Promote continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and improve throughput.
- Ensure shops are clean, organized, and laid out to maximize effectiveness and safety.
Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement
- Take ownership of all production-related issues, including schedule delays, material shortages, equipment failures, and labor challenges.
- Analyze root causes of production problems and implement sustainable solutions.
- Support process improvements, workflow optimization, and capacity planning efforts.
Shipping & Receiving Coordination
- Oversee shipping and receiving activities to ensure timely receipt of materials and on-time delivery of finished products.
- Coordinate with logistics and project teams to align production output with shipping schedules.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and industry best practices.
- Promote a strong safety culture and ensure all production areas operate safely and responsibly.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in a production or operations management role within a steel fabrication or heavy manufacturing environment.
- Strong knowledge of structural and architectural steel fabrication processes.
- Demonstrated ability to lead foremen and manage multiple production departments simultaneously.
- Excellent organizational, scheduling, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and leadership abilities.
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
- Experience with production metrics, quotas, and performance tracking.
Preferred Experience
- Background in structural steel fabrication shops with exposure to paint systems and shipping logistics.
- Familiarity with production planning software or ERP systems.
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience.
Work Environment
- Manufacturing and shop-floor-based role with regular exposure to fabrication, welding, cranes, forklifts, and industrial equipment.
- Fast-paced, deadline-driven environment requiring hands-on leadership and on-site presence.
